NAIDOC Celebration 2024

NAIDOC Week 2024 was a memorable celebration filled with activities that brought our community together to honour and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and achievements. This year's theme resonated deeply with our values of holistic recovery and community support values. As an NDIS provider dedicated to mental health support and psychosocial recovery coaching, we were thrilled to be part of such a meaningful event.

One of the highlights was the damper-making lessons, where we gathered around a fire and made a damper from scratch, incorporating native ingredients. This activity was more than just cooking; it was an opportunity to connect with traditional Aboriginal practices and learn about the significance of native foods in the culture. Creativity flowed during our Indigenous art workshop. Participants engaged in leaf and canvas painting, along with dot face painting. The art created was a beautiful representation of our connection to the land and the rich cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We plan to frame the leaf artworks and display them proudly in our community space.

Our Open Pantry initiative was a testament to the spirit of giving within our community. Community members and organisations donated clothes, dry food items, personal care products, and blankets. The concept was simple: take what you need, leave what you can. This initiative highlighted the importance of community support and the impact of small acts of kindness on our collective recovery journey. The Yarn Circle provided a space for reflection and connection. Community members shared stories, discussed the importance of NAIDOC Week, and explored what their culture means to them. This informal gathering allowed for meaningful conversations and fostered a sense of belonging and mutual support.

A traditional smoking ceremony performed by local Aboriginal Elder Uncle Neville Sampson was a profound experience. Uncle Neville welcomed us to the country, shared stories, and highlighted the significance of the ceremony in Aboriginal culture. This ceremony was a powerful reminder of the rich traditions that have been passed down through generations. Our BBQ lunch was a feast that brought everyone together. With cupcakes and bread generously donated by Mikeloren Patisserie, we enjoyed a delicious and heartwarming meal. Local community members Dan Creighton and Mark Sutherland and our own Brad Flanders, shared insights into this year's theme, deepening our understanding and appreciation of NAIDOC Week.

We were honoured to have visitors from various organisations, including Challenge, Billabong, NSW Health, Disability Advocacy NSW, Hunter New England Health, TFSS, Homes North community housing, Community Corrections, and Scope Australia. Their significant donations to our pantry made a real difference and showcased the power of community collaboration. As an NDIS provider, we recognise the importance of cultural events like NAIDOC Week in supporting mental health and promoting a holistic recovery journey. Celebrating together, sharing stories, and embracing our diverse heritage helps strengthen the bonds within our community. We look forward to next year's celebration and continuing our support for our community's well-being and the cultural richness of our community. Stay tuned for updates and photos of our beautiful leaf artwork frames on display. Let's keep the spirit of NAIDOC Week alive throughout the year!
